Regifting, or Recycling

After a hectic month, I'm back to the blog. Now that the holidays are over, and you have tons of gifts, some of which you probably would say are not your favorites. Ot could be for someone twice your size, wrong color, jewelry that looks like it should be in the dollar store, or worse. Some of the gifts have not much wrong, you just don't need or want it. How many orange sweaters can you realy wear? Are 6 navy turtlenecks enough?

Many of these items are not returnable as they came from a store far away, or perhaps another country. What to do with these gifts?

One possibility it donating the gifts to a organization that will be sure someone that needs it receives it. Anothr is to just put it away in the back of your closet and hope it will be in style again, or fit better next year.

Am approach that is becoming acceptable is regifting. I prefer to call it recycling. This is giving one of your unwanted gifts to someone else a a gift.

Just do it right.Be sure it's something the recipient wants, the size/color/season are right too. Be very sure you recycle into a different circle of friends or associates. You certainly don't want the person that gave you the gift originally to see someone else has it. This could cause hurt feelings.

Be sure the recycled gift is new. Only antiques are acceptable as used. That is real antiques, not just old items. Be sure the item is clean and undamaged. It should have all the tags still on it. If it's other than clothes or antiques, be sure it's in the original shrink-wrapped package.

Be very very sure there is not a card addressed to you from someone else attached or in the package. This is the most common method of getting caught.

Certain gifts should never be recycled. The no no list includes anything hand made or custom made, or family heirlooms. Definately do not give your grandmother's wedding gown.

Keep in mind, the greatest gifts of all - friendship and love. Anything given from the heart should be kept.

Breakfast at Tiffany's

A simple, but elegant black dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in the film 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' was designed by Givenchy. The dress was auctioned at Christy's London with a winning bid of more than CDN$1 million.

The sale proceeds will be donated to City of Joy Aid which helps the indigent in India.

A photo of the dress is here.

It's serendipity how this dress will help similar people that Audrey Hepburn helped as Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations.

Russian Furs

Russian Winters are very cold, so cold Winter has defeated armies invading Russia. Keeping warm keeps the fur industry in business. Russian furs are beautiful, and have Style.

The coat shown on the right has contrasting furs, in stripes and trim on the sleeves. The bodice has another fur totally. The bottom uneven, the skins themselves.

The body itself is classic, with the design created by the skins.

It's a fabulous look.

The designer and manufacturer are unknown. If anyone knows, please advise for proper credit.

Surrealistic T-Shirts

From The Mountain, a fabulous collection of t-shirts and tank tops. The designs are surealistic, similar to Erte. There is an assortment of themes. The two pictured are from the Fantasy Collections. Other Collections include animals, hunting, zoo, Native American, aquaic, dogs and cats, gardening and more. Sizes are Adult M - XXXL, and Youth S - XL. They generally retail for under $20.00.

The t-shirts are a great gift for most people, especially those into art. I would also use them as wall hangings. To hang them, get lightweight curtain rods with the hardware. Push the rod through the sleeves, and hang the rod on the hardware. Measure the t-shirt for the correct size curtain rod.

Holidays and Fashion

In two days it will be Turkey Day. The day after is Black Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year. I don't even want to think about the parking situation, the crowds, the exhaustion at the end of the day.

There is plenty of fashion online. It's easy, fun to find, and lots of unusual items. Plus no parking problems. No Traffic, no crowds. And best - all purchases are delivered right to your door.

Look at this perfect men's watch from Tiffany's. It has such style and elegance. This is a great gift for the special man in your life. If not the Tiffany brand (it costs too much to even think about mentioning), try a Tiffany knock off. They don't have the name, but many look very good.

Star Trek

I love Star Trek - especially the original series. This weekend TVLAND at night is broadcasting all Star Trek. The crew wore uniforms. It sems to me the uniforms were not even utilitarian as most uniforms. I'm not even sure if they had pockets. They were ok, although the women had very mini uniforms. Minis weren't even in style then. Was it sexism? Or just a glimpse of the future as the rest of the show? Or was it to achieve higher ratings? The Vulcans had interesting fashions. I love the long flowing gowns.

I find it interesting so many of the clothes of the beings from other planets, galaxies, or solar systems had similar fashion.

Ooops - Star Trek is on NOW!!! I'm going to watch!

Live long and prosper.

Prada

Shoes! We all love lots of gorgeous shoes. How many of us can compete with the numbers of shoes that Imelda Marcos had in her famous collection?

The pumps at the right are by Prada - you know, as in 'The Devil Wears Prada'.

These are simply must-have shoes! Suede, platform, open toes, and a perfect buckle.

Find then at Neiman Marcus.

For Target lovers, try these fabulous peep toe, platform pumps. The sexy pleated swirls give great style to this shoe. Open, or peep toes were made desirable by Joan Crawford in the 1940s. It's classic.

Men are Fashionable

This is a fabulous striped shirt by Robert Graham found at Saks.

Look at the attention to detail with contrast check fabric by the collar, button placket, and cuffs.

This is a very classy, yet casual shirt.

It looks perfect with Rock & Republic slightly faded straight leg jeans. These are made of stretch denim (perfect for the times when dinner was so good you couldn't stop). Available at Saks.

Red fights AIDS

2006 is a busy year for Bono, lead singer for U2. Bono connected with Bobby Shriver of the Kennedy clan to produce RED branded products. The sale of the products generate a percentage of the profits to fight AIDS in Africa.

Never one to do anything in a small way, Bono has joined with companies such as Motorola and the Gap. The tank top on the right is just one of the RED items available at the Gap. Motorola is selling a RED Bluetooth headset.

In 9 October New Yorker magazine, most ads are RED with models Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Garner, Chris Rock, Don Cheadle and many others.

Apple has a RED IPod, with a $10.00 donation for each one sold. Converse has RED in pairs.

To kick off the RED campaign, Bono went shopping in Chicago with Oprah.
Bono is modeling RED Sunglasses from Armani.

Buy and wear RED.

Edun

I found Edun while looking for something totally different. Bono (lead singer of U2 for those that may be on another planet) puts his money where his mouth is for sure. He is one of the most socially consious people on this planet.

Edun is Bono's ideals moved to the next higher level. Not only that, the clothes are fabulous and not expensive.

Edun is associated with the One Campaign - to make poverty history.

If these designs are any indication, poverty will be history a lot soon rather than later.

From their site:

EDUN is a socially conscious clothing company created by Ali Hewson and Bono with New York clothing designer Rogan Gregory. Two years in the planning before its launch in spring 2005. The company aims to bring the issue of sustainable employment to the world of catwalks and high fashion. This is conscious consumerism, with a radical and crucially stylish twist.

EDUN grew out of a desire to shirt the focus away from aid in the developing world, particularly Africa, to trade. It is an attempt to help deliver the fishing rod rather than the fish. For instance, 'Africa has lost six percent of the world trade since the Seventies.' Ali points out. 'If they could regain one per cent of that, Africa would earn $70 billion a year. They currently receive only $22 billion a year in aid.'

EDUN is utilizing locally-run factories in Africa, South Africa and India. 'These facilities have all been personally inspected and approved by the EDUN team, ensuring that they operate on sound business and ethical bases.

EDUN is a for-profit initiative with an attempt to create a business model others will want to replicate, which will encourage reinvestment in the work force of the developing world.

Ruffables

This is the latest and greatest for your pets - dogs, cats, pigs, whatever other pets you may have. In the pic to the right is Elena, creater of Ruffables. Next to her is Samba modeling a Ruffable.

These are great! They are available in a variety of patterns, colors, and sizes. There are even Ruffables with holiday themes! Those are the most fun!

You can browse through the site and order any Ruffable online. They are great gifts too.

Under-Weight

Lately there is a lot of talk about weight. Not weight of fabrics or clothes, but the models weight. For a very long time models have been underweight. Many people, especially young girls look to fashion models as the example of a perfect body. They are bombarded with ads featuring this look from the time they are old enough to read the fashion magazines.

Many of the models over age 15 have eating disorders that are kept secret. If they gain a pound, it may keep them from working.

Unfortunately, for preteen and teenage girls, the pages of a fashion magazine show the looks they want for the season, including size and weight. To accomplish the underweight look, many develop eating disorders. Others develop self-esteem and self-image problems. There is certainly enough pressure for young girls without the added pressure of weight.

Many adults don't realize a great number of models are 14 years old. Yes, 14. They are dressed and made to look like they are 20 years old. The clothes they model will be sold to women older than 20. As one grows up, bodies change. It's biology, and cannot be changed. No matter how one diets, a 40 year old will never have the body of a 14 year old. Neither will an 18 year old. This has been going on for many many years.

Fashion Week has showings in a few major cities. This year, in Madrid, underweight models were banned totally. It is a step to be applauded. Those models that strive to keep underweight may not work here, or be happy, but the showings will not have models that look like they are recent arrivals from a starving country.

Joining the ranks of Madrid, Israeli retail companies came to an agreement to not use underwight models. For the companies that disagree in Israel, legislation may decide the issue.

In London, the fashion industry is continuing to use underweight models. There is a very public disagreement going on now about underweight models, with many in the London fashion industry dismissing any responsibility for any negative actions by girls trying to emulate underweight models.

The fashion industry along with the advertising industry, movie and television actresses create an irresistable combination creating an intense desire to emulate those in the spotlight. The fashion industry may say clothes look better on people that are tall and thin (think very underweight). That may be true. Why don't they design clothes that look good on non-underweight people?

A Cigar Box Purse

A cigar box purse is unique, personal, and with a soupçon of old world charm.

Make your own cigar box purse.

Making a cigar box purse is simple and fun. It’s a true statement about yourself. It’s absolutely unique – no one else will have the identical purse. It’s a great gift for someone that has everything – or appears to have everything.

Directions:

Buy a simple wooden box (lightweight wood), or find a real cigar box. There are still cigar stores as smoking cigars is very much in fashion.

Find some pictures or photos you like, or create a painting on paper, or other flat work of art.

You will need the hardware – handle, hinges, clasp and corners, in a matching metal. You can find this online.

Choose a color of paint that matches the pictures or art and the hardware. Use warm colors and metal together, or cold colors and metal together. Use red and blue with gold-tone or brass, black or white with silver-tone or chromes.

Get a clear or tinted lacquer, depending on the look you want.

Now for the easy part:

Paint the box and let dry.

Glue on the picture or art and let dry.

Add a few coats of lacquer, you may want to use spray rather than a brush, and let dry.

Attach all of the hardware.

Complete!

Clothes Should have a Great Fit

Have you ever been in a dressing room and talked yourself into buying an outfit that looked great – on someone else? Or too small? Too big? Or a great buy because it's marked down to almost nothing, but it doesn't exactly fit?

If it doesn’t fit right in the dressing room, it won’t fit right or look good when you wear it. It will still be too big, too small, or something else.

Here are tips to keep in mind when buying clothes if you want them to look and feel good, and fit well.

Color Theme

Wear the same color from head to toe for an illusion of a long lean line. Neutral colors work best for this effect:
  • black
  • brown
  • grey
  • navy
  • white
Break it up with color in your accessories, a scarf, or shoes.

The Correct Size

Wear clothes that are your size, not the size in your wishful thinking. Sometimes one size in one style or manufactuer does not fit the same as another. Just be sure it fits. If you must have a dress or suit that does not fit, be sure it can be altered. Your tailor is your friend.

Be Aware of Fabrics

Wear fabrics that don't hug your body instead of cling to them. Fabrics should fall naturally, making you look good, not lumpy. Wear fabrics in season, and appropriate for the occassion.

Skirts

The most flattering shape skirts to wear for everyone is the basic A-line skirt. It looks good on everybody and is great for hiding flaws.

Jeans

Jeans are my comfort clothes. They can be very casual, with just a t-shirt, or dress them up with a cashmere sweater, halter top, jacket, and great jewelry. You're good to go most places.

Ralph Lauren is not just Fashion

Ralph Lauren is a household name for all the fabulous designs he's created for so many areas of our lives. He's one of the designers that others copy. This article is not about fashion, but about another side of Ralph Lauren most never see or read about. It's not hidden, just not as publicized as fashion.

This began in 2001 with a meeting between Ralph Lauren and Dr. Harold P. Freeman. Dr. Freeman inspired Ralph Lauren to become further involved in cancer screening and treatment for all.

This inspiration gave birth to The Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention, a community based Center for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. It is located in East Harlem, New York.

The Center was made possible through a grant by the Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation. It's designed for research, screening, and outreach to a community which is often ignored.

The center design itself was created with a feeling of serenity with the help of Ralph Lauren designers. It reflects the community where it is located.

Ralph Lauren is to be applauded and recognized for this valuable contribution to NYC.

Dress Correctly for that Job Interview

Those entering the workforce may need to change their style of dress for a job interview. Sweats, flannel lounging pants, sneakers, jeans with holes all have got to go. Keep them for times when you're hanging out with friends - off the job.

Your appearance is the first impression a potential employer has about you. What impression do you want to give? Wearing appropriate clothes makes a huge difference. Researching how others dress in the company is a help, but not enough. People on interviews are expected to dress better.

Employers look at more than just clothes. Is your hair pink? green? striped? Those types of colors are not acceptable for interviews in most places. Jewelry should be understated. It is very annoying to be distracted by huge pieces of jewelry, especially if it makes noise. Jewelry should be quiet.

Tatoos are another no-no. If you have any tatoos that may show, cover them with stage make-up. Remove any items from body piercing, except earrings (guys - no earrings for you).

All clothes should be clean, pressed, match, and fit well. Don't look like you just rolled out of bed in your grandparents old clothes.

Don't worry about business casual, business, casual, or other descriptions. A suit is always good. Grey is a perfect color for interviews.

Revealing clothes creates a very negative impression. You expect to be accepted as a professional, so dress like a professional.

Wear clothes that are comfortable. This does not mean jeans and slippers. You may be at the interview for several hours. Clothes that are uncomfortable, or don't fit properly, will make you uncomfortable. That will show up in your attitude.

Do some research on the industry for standards. This may vary according to geographic area. If in doubt, alway dress as if you are going to a financial institution on Wall Street - very conservative, grey suit, white shirt, black shoes. Look like a model for Brooks Brothers.

Clothes don't need to be expensive, but get good quality. If finances are an issue, often you can find exactly what you need in a resale shop.

A Guy's Point of View

I still can’t understand it. I can’t make sense out of what is in or out of fashion – appropriate or inappropriate clothes for each occasion. What was in last year is out this year – or it might be in but you need to change accessories. What was good for spring and summer won’t work for fall and winter. What is in now was likely already in somewhere around 20 years ago but then it went out - and was replaced with another item that was in. Jeans are so much easier.

I gotta find the Fashion Bible. There has to be one out there. Something that says you can't wear the same thing as you wore last year. The women's section has to be huge - everything but the last ten pages. Guys don’t seem to matter quite as much. Actually, not much at all. They’re an afterthought in case they are looking for a gift for someone. Jeans go anywhere.

I can’t understand it. Why sometimes those really high heels are good and sometimes they are not. Why sometimes bling bling is good and sometimes it isn’t. What is bling bling? Why grandma pins are sometimes good and sometimes they aren’t. Or big earrings? Why anyone would ever not wear minis is beyond me. OK, I’m I guy. I like looking.

Are pleated trousers be in or out? What about tweed? Blazers? Why do women’s handbags match their shoes? Can summer shoes be the same as winter shoes? Probably not, huh? And what’s wrong with t-shirts and jeans? I think it looks great. What’s the deal with buying new jeans that look like they’ve already been worn? Buy used jeans.

How many buttons are guys dress jackets supposed to have this year? Are pleated dress pants in or out? What is business casual? Are cuffs in or not? Why can’t ties be any color? Why do we wear them at all? The are ridiculous. Why do all men look like penguins when they dress formally? A great t-shirt and jeans works just as well, better.

And have you looked at underwear lately? I understand that the women like to do all sorts of push up/out, accent, emphasize, enhancement, colors, show off stuff. Guys – we’re out of control. Ads in Times Square? Where do they get the models? I thought our underwear was to keep our family jewels in place and protected. There are articles describing what kinds of underwear the celebrities are wearing. Does anyone care? I just don’t get it.

I never will understand this fashion stuff. If we’re clean and comfortable, warm, cool or dry depending, we’re good. What else matters? Give me my jeans.

Norma Kamali

A great, easy to wear look from one of America's top designers - Norma Kamali. This shirt and belt are shown with wide leg black pants. It would look just as well with narrow leg pants. For a slightly different look, use a belt in a bright color. Add small jewelry - don't distract from the 'look'.

Available at Bloomie's.

Fashion Ave

It started as a few blocks, in a few buildings on 7th Avenue in New York City. Over the years, it has expanded from 7th Avenue to Broadway, 34th Street to 41st Street, a few side streets, the Empire State Building, and a couple of other place.

It's the New York Garment Center. A number of years ago, several streets were given 'honorary names'. 7th Avenue, in the garment center was given the name Fashion Avenue.

Each building covers a certain part of the market, with 7th Avenue having more expensive manufacturers than Broadway. Each building is filled with showrooms from the very inexpensive clothing to designer labels.

These few blocks are the very heart of the apparel industry in the U.S.

Fashionable First Ladies

Do the First Ladies in the past twenty or so years have a clue about fashion? They are all interchangeable, with a couple of exceptions. They mostly look like a cross between the Stepford Wives and Barbies.

Can't they at least find someone to help them have a little style?
Something to make them memorable?

Hillary Clinton was memerable with her sense of fashion. What ever you may think about her personally, or her politics, her style was distintive. Yes, very distinctive. She has no clue about style and fashion. None. Will some great designer please help her? While we're helping her gain a sense of great style and fashion, someone else can help her with her hair.

The last First Lady with a great style, a great sense of fashion, a trendsetter, was Jackie Kennedy. That woman knew how to dress. She was elegant. Just fabulous. She had her own style. Women all over tried to emulate her, and she started quite a few trends.

Jackie was the quintessence of style. This carried thru her entire life. It wasn't just limited to clothes. She taught several generations about Style.

Why can't the other First Ladies do half as well?

Hurricaine Fashion

Hurricaine season has started for 2006. Ernesto didn't do much damage in Florida, it was just a tropical storm there. It picked up speed as it went over the warm waters traveling north. Damage in the Carolinas is expected to be worse than Florida.

What to do for a hurricaine? Most know the basics, stock up on food, water, batteries, etc. Boring. It has to be done, but boring.

There are more interesting items to add to the list. First, a stop at the local liquor store for your favorite beverages, and that of everyone else you know. If they deliver, all the better.

Next, the supermarket. Yes, get the basics. Then get all the goodies for a party. Various cheeses are great. This is always a good time to taste new cheeses. Cavier is also fun. Fresh tomatoes are great this time of year. They make a great salsa. A huge bowl of shrimp is great snacking. Use your imagination. Don't forget mixers!

Call everyone you know - or have room for - that is local and invite them all for a hurricaine party! You might want to ask each to bring something - food, drinks, paper goods. Guests should arrive ASAP. After all, who wants to be alone for a hurricaine?

It's fun to play board games, team games, watch movies, play music and even dance! You could make a list for a scavenger hunt after the hurricaine passes. Course people may be hunting for their cars first...

And clothes? Whatever is most comfortable. The perfect outfit is jeans and a huge comfortable shirt, preferably a t-shirt.

This is riding out the hurricaine In Fashion!

Colors of Diamonds

Once upon a time, it was rare to see anything but a white diamond. There were few other colors known to the general public. Occassionally one might hear somethig about a Canary (yellow) diamond or such. Most often this was just a stone with poor color. Today there are hundreds of known colors of diamonds. It's very fashionable to wear diamonds of almost any color.

Diamonds are often mixed in color to create a stunning piece of jewelry. Other pieces of jewelry are created with other gemstones using a diamond as part of the design, or an accent stone.

A diamond, no matter the color, is a good investment aside from a fabulous piece of jewelry. These pieces often become heirlooms.

A quick word about buying diamonds: Always go to a jeweler you trust. Get an professional appraisal from someone not recommended by the place you make the purchase. Learn about buying diamonds, it's not simple.

Shapes of Diamonds

Diamonds are cut in many shapes. How the stone is cut is determined by the cutter - how will the stone look the best? Often this is due to the shape of the uncut diamond.

The brilliant cut (round) is classic. Other shapes are popular also, and seem to go in and out of fashion. You will see pear shape, emerald (rectangle) diamond, and heart. These are not the only cuts. At times, stones are set together to create another shape.

Here are a few of the shapes:

The size of the stone is by weight, using carats. You may hear someone say 'this stone is 3 carats'. That is the weight of the stone.

Other times you will hear the term 'total weight'. This is used for multiple stones, usually of a smaller size.

The shape of the stone also determines the depth. You can't always decide the size from seeing only one view.

Often, the only diamond owned is an engagement ring. This is a classic ring from Tiffany's. You can see how the stone is set to show the beauty. It's usually set in platinum for a better color match.
